WLOX Editorial: Remember and honor those who died serving our country

Memorial Day: It's a National Holiday, a long weekend that kicks off the summer vacation season. Many of us get the day off. How will you spend your long weekend?

We are suggesting you put aside some of your time this weekend to remember and honor those who died serving this country. If you are able and available, consider joining about a thousand of your neighbors. They will be at Biloxi National Cemetery Saturday morning at 8 o'clock.

Gautier mayor on 2% tax: We've only got one shot at this

GAUTIER, MS (WLOX)- Gautier leaders said they only have one shot at passing a two percent sales tax for hotels and restaurants, so they don't want to pull the trigger too soon. Originally, the tax vote was supposed to be on June 4th. Gautier city leaders now plan to use that ballot to test the waters instead.

The mayor looks at the city's parks and envisions what they could be if the funding was there. The city wants to build a baseball youth complex, football fields and more.

The Floor Trader Gulf Coast is running their 2nd Annual Ugly Floor Contest for coast residents. Contestants can enter simply by submitting a photo of their “Ugly Floors” on the company Facebook Page by June 7. The winner will receive $500 in free flooring for a new flooring makeover.

Mississippi is prone to severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, and the American Red Cross urges residents to take steps now to stay safer when severe weather threatens.
 
“After recent severe weather and tornadoes across several states, this is the time to stop what you’re doing and make sure you and your family are prepared," said Don Stephens, emergency services director. “Create a disaster preparedness plan now before our community is threatened by high winds, hail, lightning and excessive rainfall.”

MGCCC announces 2012-2013 graduates

Nearly 2,000 students graduated from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College during the 2012-2013 school year.  The annual commencement ceremony was held on May 9 at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi. 

Jackson Co. chooses representatives for new tourism board

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX)- Jackson County's Board of Supervisors on Monday appointed three representatives to the new tri-county tourism board: Rich Westfall, Carla Todd and Richard Chenoweth.

The 15 member regional tourism board was created under a bill recently signed by Governor Phil Bryant. It replaces the Harrison County Tourism Commission.

Both Jackson and Hancock counties will have three representatives on the board. Harrison County will have nine members.
